Who are we?

History of the Irish Setter Club Of Ohio

At the 1947 Western Reserve Kennel Club show in Cleveland, three Irish Setter fanciers (Wolfram Stumpf, Dr. Jay Calhoun and Hugh Rumbaugh) got together and decided to try to form the Irish Setter Club of Ohio. Each of these three men contacted other fanciers and just two weeks later, on St. Patrick’s Day, 1947, a meeting was held at the Carter Hotel in Cleveland.

Charter members of this new club were: Robert Anderson, Florence Anderson, Jay Calhoun M.D., James Moore, Lillian Robeson, Hugh Rumbaugh, Eleanor Speaker, Burton Speaker, and Mary Louise Svetlik. Although they are no longer with us, we thank them for laying the cornerstone for the great club we have today.

Also, since that time, we have held more than 75 Independent Specialties. We have also held obedience, and rally trials. We currently hold two – three day Agility Trials in September and January.  We have held numerous field trials and hunt tests. We have hosted ISCA, (Irish Setter Club of America) National Specialties and ISCA National Walking Events and the ISCA National Gun Dog Championship Field Trial, all with great success. We currently hold two field trials each year, Spring and Fall, and hold back-to-back Specialties in August.

Our membership has grown to more than 60 members. Many friendships have formed because of the common bond around our beautiful Irish Setters.
